Life on the Rez
New book presents short Science Fiction, Fantasy stories inspired by life on America's Indian Reservations
Life on an Indian Reservation embodies two of the major themes to be found in the genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy: On a daily basis, Natives and non-Natives alike encounter (or are forced into) situations that explore the concept of The Other, and they grapple with the idea of what it means to Be Human.
So what happens when a small, independent book publisher puts out a call to North America's Reservation communities asking for Science Fiction and Fantasy stories inspired by life there?
The result is an anthology of speculative fiction entitled Life on the Rez. This book collects 13 tales of un-reality as seen through the lens of the Reservation system. These stories take the reader from a dusty street in Northwest Montana to the icy moons of Jupiter. They explore forgotten tribes of the past and introduce the newest member of the family in the near future. And they show that life on the Reservation isn't restricted to those who are still alive, at least not if the number of ghosts there is any indication.
"From the very day this project began, we have known that it's going to rub some people the wrong way, if for different reasons," says editor, Raymond K. Rugg. "Some people will consider it to be a sop to the politically-correct camp, an act of pandering to some minority movement in the Spec Fic world. Others will feel that this collection should have been restricted to submissions only from Native writers, that having stories by both Natives and non-Natives results in a form of cultural appropriation. But I am of the belief that whatever it is that you are looking for, that's what you'll find. So if you open up this book looking for something that you can be offended, upset, or outraged about, I have no doubt you that you'll find it. On the other hand, if you are hoping for some good speculative fiction tales that happen to explore a way of life unknown to the vast majority of the population of North America, then similarly, I think you'll come across what you were seeking."
Life on the Rez: Science Fiction and Fantasy Inspired by Life on America's Indian Reservations is available from Tree-Lion Press in print and digital formats from Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the book goes to support education for Native and non-Native students at Tribal Colleges in the United States and Canada by way of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium.
